This September, Metro Vancouver Transit Police Constable Mike Bjornson will join other local first responders for the 8-day, 800 km Cops for Cancer: Tour de Coast bike ride that raises money for childhood cancer research and support services at the Canadian Cancer Society.
Prior to joining Transit Police in 2013, Mike worked as a carpenter for 8 years before deciding to join the “family business” of law enforcement. His father, Bjorn, worked with VPD for 30 years and Transit Police for 14 years; his brother, John, has served with VPD for almost 20 years. Mike continues to practice carpentry and other trades while completing projects at home for his family. This is Mike’s first time representing Transit Police in the Cops for Cancer: Tour de Coast journey.
“This ride means a lot to me personally,” says Mike. “Like many families, ours has felt the devastating impact of cancer. I’m riding in memory of my uncle, who passed away from cancer in 2021. Being a part of this event is my way of turning that experience into something positive and helping children who are facing cancer far too early in life.”
Further fueling Mike’s determination to meet his ambitious $10,000 fundraising goal is his steadfast support of Transit Police Constable Ray Athway. Mike and Ray were partners, working in C Squad’s West Division together before Ray’s diagnosis. “Ray has become a true friend who always has my back, and it goes without saying that I’m in this battle with him until he is back on the road,” says Mike.
The Cops for Cancer: Tour de Coast will take place September 11 to 18, 2026. All money raised will go toward supporting local families affected by childhood cancer. Funds are directed to life-saving paediatric research and caring support programs like Camp Goodtimes.
