Transit Police at 20: Looking to the future

This week, we’ll be celebrating 20 years since Transit Police became operational as a Designated Policing Unit on December 4, 2005. We’re proud of the unique achievements and milestones we’ve reached along the way and we’re keeping our eyes on the exciting road that’s ahead of us.

Transit is a popular way of getting around in Metro Vancouver, essential for many, and the TransLink transit system is expanding quickly. The Expo Line will expand to bring SkyTrain deeper into Surrey and Langley by the end of this decade. Meanwhile in Vancouver, construction is in full swing on the Broadway Subway Project that will offer high speed travel along the Broadway corridor even sooner. Elsewhere, the Burnaby Mountain Gondola project is being planned. And that’s in addition to the expansions underway within the bus network and at stations and transit exchanges. And, as transit expands, our police service will expand right alongside it.

That means we will need more Transit Police Community Safety Officers, Police Officers and Civilian Professionals as we grow, to help us keep transit safe. And we’ll be exploring the latest tools and innovations that will help them in their work, as they become available. New technology, like drones and AI, may one day become commonplace in Metro Vancouver policing and keeping the transit system safe.

FIFA World Cup 2026 will bring the world to Vancouver in June, and we’ll be ready. Transit Police officers receive regular training to handle any situation that may threaten public safety on and around the transit system, and our focus on community policing will help everyone feel safe and supported.

We are excited to see what the future holds.
