New Westminster – A 41-year-old man is in custody following an alleged cell phone robbery.
On Wednesday, November 27th, 2019, at approximately 5:30pm, a woman walked past King George SkyTrain Station, holding her phone in her hand while using it. As she walked past the station entrance, a man standing there allegedly grabbed at her phone and tried to wrestle it from her grip. A brief struggle ensued, with the suspect pushing the victim to the ground, on her back, while straddling her at the waist. He then allegedly pushed the victims face toward the ground and pulled the phone from her grip.
As the suspect walked away with her phone, the victim followed him to try and get it back. He then, allegedly, pushed her into some bushes before running away. Several witnesses came to the victim’s aid and waited to speak to police who broadcast the suspect description.
A short time later, the Surrey RCMP attended an unrelated call for service in the area. After dealing with the person in their call, they determined he matched the description of our suspect. When checked, he was found to be in possession of the stolen phone. Transit Police attended and took custody of the man.
Arrested and charged with one count of Robbery was, 41-year-old, Aaron SUTHERLAND, no fixed address who is well known to police. SUTHERLAND has been remanded into custody with his next court appearance scheduled for December 11, 2019, 9:30 am, in Surrey Provincial Court
