Morning Delay on Canada Line Caused by Mental Health Crisis

New Westminster – Metro Vancouver Transit Police would like to thank transit customers affected by the delay this morning on the Canada Line for their patience during a difficult situation.

At 0530 hours, this morning, January 28, 2015, a guideway intrusion alarm was received for a man walking south bound on the guideway from Marine Drive SkyTrain Station toward Bridgeport Skytrain Station. The portion of the guideway involved is elevated and crosses over the Fraser River. The system was powered down to protect the man from the high voltage portions of the tracks and any moving trains.

Transit Police officers closed off the ends of the bridge portion of the guideway and alerted the Coast Guard. Several witnesses reported seeing a man lying on the walkway on the bridge. Officers approached the man and took him into custody without incident.

The 25 year old was experiencing a mental health crisis and was taken to hospital for assessment and treatment.

The Canada Line was powered down for 40 minutes causing unavoidable delays for some early morning commuters.
